Travertine park

For many decades up until 2007, travertine was quarried in the middle of Bad Cannstatt from Stuttgart's rich mineral water resources. But what to do with a quarry in the city that is no longer in use? The geologically and ecologically significant area has been rededicated and is now a local recreation area, open-air museum and biotope all in one. The former quarries are now embedded in a green area where you can experience the history of the industry. Old stone processing equipment, crane tracks and rails have been left as park elements. Comfortable paths lead through the biotope, which offers a magnificent view of Bad Cannstatt.

Figures / Data / Facts

  • When planning the park, great importance was attached to protecting the habitat of endangered species. A biotope was created for the resident wall lizards and sand lizards. A newly created natural pond below the quarry serves as an ideal habitat for them.
  • The park stretches from the Altenburger Steige below the Reiterkaserne to the area above the Stuttgart-Münster power station.
  • The park was officially opened on May 19, 2010 and the entire park was opened to the public at the end of September 2014 after a 14-month redesign of the core area of the park.
  • The Verband Region Stuttgart supported the construction of the travertine park with a total of 325,000 euros.

Tavertinpark is easily accessible by public transport from two directions. Either from the tram stop "Kraftwerk Münster" (line U14) or from the stop "Bottroper Straße" (line U12). From there it is only a few minutes' walk.
