Albtrauf master plan

Extensive beech forests, juniper heaths, orchid meadows, striking rocky outcrops with impressive views and traditional spas characterize the area around the Albtrauf in the north-eastern part of the Swabian Alb. Compared to other parts of the region, the natural area is exposed to comparatively low levels of noise and air pollution.

An initial request from eight municipalities from the Alb foreland for a Landschaftspark Albtrauf in 2006 and a successful application for co-financing for a cross-municipal hiking trail - the Albtraufgänger - in 2007 was followed at the end of 2008 by the official application from 25 municipalities for a Landschaftspark Albtrauf Master Plan. Between 2009 and 2011, a working group consisting of the Netzwerk für Kommunikation und Planung and the Gruppe für ökologische Gutachten, both from Stuttgart, as well as Kohl und Partner from Waldstetten, drew up the master plan.

Similar to the challenges in the Landschaftspark Limes, the analysis revealed untapped development potential for local recreation and tourism, as well as for nature and the environment. The task is to showcase the special landscape features of the Albtrauf, make them accessible and link them together, while at the same time respecting the sensitive landscape. Against this background, objectives and project proposals were formulated for the three fields of action of local recreation and tourism, nature conservation and preservation of the cultural landscape and regional product marketing.
