The Rems runs through the region from the east until it flows into the Neckar in Remseck. In the course of industrialization, the course of the Rems was changed and straightened several times in favour of settlements and traffic routes. From Waiblingen eastwards, the B 29 federal highway and railway lines form spatial barriers between the two sides of the slope in many places and impair the quality of life along the river. Many river and bank areas are only accessible and can only be experienced to a limited extent. In order to prevent the towns and municipalities from merging into a ribbon of settlements, green zones were defined in the regional plan at an early stage, which may not be built on.
After the Stuttgart Region Association's legally agreed sponsorship of the Stuttgart Region Landschaftspark, the association invited tenders for the first master plan for the Rems Valley. This was drawn up between 2006 and 2007 by Planstatt Senner from Überlingen and Stuttgart. The Remstal Route e.V. tourism association (now Remstal Tourismus e.V.), which has been active on an inter-municipal basis since 1993, was a good prerequisite for the cross-regional approach.
The idea behind the master plan was a string of pearls - the Rems as a connecting element of the municipalities, which are lined up along the valley floor. Together with the local stakeholders, three core themes were identified, for each of which a mission statement was developed: Tourism and local recreation, settlement and traffic, and land use, water bodies and biotopes. The project ideas derived from these are aimed at strengthening the Rems Valley in its spatial context, expanding the existing cycle and hiking trail network and increasing the ecological continuity and experienceability of the river landscape.
In the search for ways to implement the project ideas in the long term and preserve the sense of community from the planning process, the 16 municipalities along the Rems - from its source to its mouth - successfully applied to host an inter-municipal garden show in 2019 on the basis of the master plan.
