The Neckar flows around 90 kilometers through the Stuttgart region. Along its course, the river is characterized by characteristic landscapes - vineyard terraces, orchards and farmland - but also numerous commercial and industrial areas, traffic routes and striking infrastructure buildings. The expansion of the Neckar to a federal waterway as far as Plochingen in the 1950s led to the loss of habitats for animals and plants over long stretches.
The master plan for the Landschaftspark Neckar identifies three main themes - settlement and traffic, landscape and local recreation and tourism - and describes corresponding guiding principles and project proposals for each. These are aimed at enhancing the Neckar as a river landscape for people and nature and making it possible to experience it again as a coherent unit. To this end, the natural habitats for plants and animals are to be improved, the local recreation and tourism infrastructure along the river is to be expanded for the population and continuous footpath and cycle path connections are to be created. The master plan was drawn up between 2007 and 2008 by Planstatt Senner from Überlingen and Stuttgart.
Numerous projects have been implemented to date by the local authorities, some in cooperation with the association. Funding from EU programs such as INTERREG and LIFE+ has been an important driver for the implementation of projects on the Neckar.
With the Addresses on the River project established in 2021, the association, in cooperation with the International Building Exhibition 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart (IBA'27), aims to raise regional awareness of the Neckar again, better connect the neighboring municipalities with the river and enhance the Neckar as a recreational area for the population. The Neckar Conference, which will be held every two years in 2022, will highlight the river's great potential for people, nature and the climate with its changing focus topics. A competition will also be held each time. Committed people from various disciplines are invited to submit innovative and forward-looking themed designs and concepts.
